Dow Theory’s Peak-and-Trough Analysis Justified

چکیده
In the analysis of dynamic financial quantities such as stock prices, equity prices, etc., reasonable results are often obtained if we only consider local maxima (“peaks”) and local minima (“troughs”) and ignore all the other values. The empirical success of this strategy remains a mystery. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this success. 1 Formulation of the Problem Peak-and-trough analysis. In the early 20th century, a theory – known as Dow Theory – was developed for forecasting the behavior of different prices, such as stock prices, equity prices, etc. The main idea behind this theory is that: • similarly to calculus, where the important first step in the analysis of a function is finding its local minima and maxima, • the important information about the changes in stock market prices can be obtained if we mark local maxima (“peaks”) and local minima (“troughs”); see, e.g., [4, 6]. This analysis is still in use. The resulting peak-and-trough analysis was widely used in the 1920s and early 1930s, until a paper [3] showed the deficiency of the corresponding forecasting techniques.

OBJECTIVE To estimate the intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction achieved by the most frequently prescribed glaucoma drugs and a placebo in a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. DESIGN Meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-seven articles reporting on 28 randomized clinical trials. These articles reported 6953 participants for the trough and 6841 for the pea...
متن کاملThe Relationship between the Plasma Level of Cyclosporine-A and Drug Dose in Patients of Kermanshah Kidney Transplantation Center
Background: Nowadays the main problem in transplantation is the complexity of host immune system protection against the immunological and destructive reactions of the transplanted organ. High serum level of the immunosuppressive drug may cause toxicity and low serum level leads to the rejection of the transplanted organ. Cyclosporine has been known as the most effective immunosuppressive drug. ...
متن کاملPriority of peak circadian variation of bronchial responsiveness to the trough of circadian variation of bronchial caliber in asthmatic children.
To study the temporal relation between the peak of circadian variation of bronchial responsiveness and the trough of circadian variation of bronchial caliber, we performed seven inhalation challenges with histamine at 4-h intervals in six stable asthmatic children aged eight to ten years. Bronchial responsiveness was expressed as PC20. Coefficient of variation of baseline FEV1 within the study ...
متن کاملClinical pharmacology of netilmicin in the newborn.
The plasma peak, trough, and peak-trough concentrations of netilmicin given to preterm and term infants were measured after different regimens to determine which dosage would provide satisfactory peak and trough concentrations. In infants aged less than 7 days, dosage regimens of 3.0 or 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours gave satisfactory peak levels (range 5.2-12.0 micrograms/ml) but troughs were above ...
متن کاملA meta-analysis on the efficacy of oral theophylline in patients with stable COPD
BACKGROUND Theophylline is a nonspecific inhibitor of phosphodiesterases that, despite exerting bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effects, is a third-line therapy rarely used to treat chronic airflow limitation. We wished to evaluate the efficacy of oral theophylline as measured by improvements in trough (pre-dose) or peak (post-dose) FEV1 and FVC in patients with clinically stable COPD. D...
